Dexter in the Nationals

Preparation is vital. No detail can be overlooked, and the ritual is intoxicating: duct tape, rubber sheets, necessary tools for play.” - Dexter Morgan

No, I’m not actually in any Nationals of any sort. That would require athletic effort, and I’m not exactly that way inclined. There is, however, something ‘national’ about tonight’s post.

Tonight, I’m a guest of the Federal Government. No, I am NOT in prison. I am, however, on holiday and staying in a National Park, in a caravan, with the air conditioning on. That’s probably for the best, since the temperature had upwardly mobile ambitions again today, but it’s night time, the caravan’s cool, and I remembered my laptop!

I’m plugged into my wireless internet, purely out of principle. Curiously, the National Park I’m staying at does have the Internet as well, but since I have to pay for that, I am sticking to my broadband I’ve already paid for, on the grounds that (a) it’s faster and (b) nobody else is on at the same time slowing things down.

It’s time for Dexy to kick back for a few days, shortly before I have to go back to both work and University. Speaking of which, the University still hasn’t finished causing problems. I got an email from the Uni today saying “You can enrol in such-and-such a class, all you have to do is go HERE and then there should be instructions”.

Was there? No, that’d be too easy, and I wouldn’t have anything to post about if it wasn’t. There was, of course, absolutely no information whatsoever on how to enrol into your preferred tutorial; there was a set of lecture notes saying that classes have already been assigned. That’s wonderful, but since there is no link at all I would find that a bit difficult to believe. I’ve sent off an email to the Uni (again, seems to be happening pretty frequently now) asking them how exactly I’m supposed to enrol into a class with no instructions and dropped a hint about my preferred class.

I’m still interested in one other class. They have said, to steal a phrase from Dexter, absolutely doodly-squat about anything. How to enrol, what the classes are, anything like that? A complete mystery, the whole thing’s silent. Still, I suppose there’ll be some explanation along the lines of “Oh, we’re running that class this year? Gosh!”. That’s also wonderful, but never mind that Uni starts back very soon and information like this might be important? Sigh.

So, what’s on the charts for little old me tomorrow? Well, I think it’s into the centre of Sydney and then a little bit of exploring from there; probably out to Manly, I don’t really know. Either way, it’s not just doing nothing at home, and it’s not at work. Speaking of which, if I go about merrily emptying my coffers, I can rest secure in the knowledge that work will ever so considerately tip some more into the bottomless pit that my savings account is suddenly becoming.

Is Dexy enjoying his holidays so far? Well, they’ve only been short so far, but yes, it’s a dang sight better than doing nothing. I’m just enjoying not having to be seperated from my precious, wonderful, irreplacable Internet, since if I was in a bad coverage area I probably would have pulled my hair out by now.

Could I complain a lot more about the Uni? Yes, I could. I won’t, though, as I’m on holiday and my true ire for anything like that will be bottled so that I don’t get annoyed and distracted while I’m trying not to be, and then vent in the peace and quiet that’ll follow my holiday, when it’s back to the daily grind.

It’s peaceful out here. We might have brought a few essentials… like a TV, a Playstation 2 which is doing a sterling job as a DVD player, a PSP, my laptop, a portable DVD player, phones and basically everything that we’d normaly use when we’re at home anyway, not that we’re trying to lug round half the universe with us again, but you’ve got to keep yourself occupied somehow. Wandering around Manly should be fun as I haven’t done that in years.

What am I happiest about, though? That I converted DD to WordPress. It means I can just fire my website up, log in and off I go, creating posts in one single design and format without all the jobsworthery and generally fiddly bits of trying to steer Dreamweaver, or worse, trying to write a full-on post from scratch in HTML and trying to remember everything I’m supposed to do so that the site doesn’t explode. Just being able to type into the same thing every single time and have the same way of doing things makes it easy. No, I’m not evangelizing for WordPress, I’m just commenting that using my brains paid off, as it’s made DD one thing it never was – portable.
